The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,

and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit,

and from you no secrets are hidden.
Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts
by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit,
that we may perfectly love you,
and worthily magnify your holy name;

The Collect of the Day
Let us pray,
Almighty God, you have shed upon us the new light of your incarnate Word. May this light, enkindled in our hearts, shine forth in our lives; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Gospel: Luke 2:22-40

Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, Jesus' parents brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the law of the Lord, "Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord"), and they offered a sacrifice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, "a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons." Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Messiah. Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying, "Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel." And the child's father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, "This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed and a sword will pierce your own soul too." There was also a prophet, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, having lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshipped there with fasting and prayer night and day. At that moment she came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem. When they had finished everything required by the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favour of God was upon him.

Prayers of the People
In joy and humility let us pray to the creator of the universe, saying, Hear our prayer.
In
the poverty of our humanity, we have become all we need, by the good news of
our salvation brought to Mary by the angel, God
of love:
We
have been made holy by the mystery of the Word made flesh, God of love:
Your
eternal love, O God, is made known to all creation by the birth in time of the
timeless Son of God. So much heartache, pain and grief were felt this year that
we rejoice in the promise of your presence. God
of love:
Even
those who have leadership roles in this world: political; religious; education;
business; and in the arts can choose wisdom by the manifestation of the King of
glory to the shepherds and magi, God of love:
We
have learnt humility by the submission of the maker of the world to Mary and
Joseph of Nazareth, may we show that same humility in serving one another, God of love:
We
have the opportunity to be committed to forgiveness, mercy, love and peace by
the baptism of the Son of God in the river Jordan, and we look with joyful
expectation to the new year, God of love:
Grant
that the powers of this world may join together in the unity of all peoples in
the realm of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, that all of us may work for the
common good; God of love:
We
pray for the sick, the suffering, and those in distress of any kind

that you would heal all injuries, comfort all grief, and settle all wrongs. God of love:

God, your love was so great for us that you gave us your Son to shine out in

Let us confess our sins, confident in God’s forgiveness.

Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen.
Almighty God have mercy upon you,
pardon and deliver you from all your sins,
confirm and strengthen you in all goodness,
and keep you in eternal life;

We give thanks to you, Lord our God, for
the goodness and love you have made known to us in creation; in calling Israel
to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in

incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Saviour and Redeemer of the world. In
him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In

On the night he was handed over to suffering
and death, a death he freely accepted, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and

Therefore, Father, according to his
command,
we remember his death,
we proclaim his resurrection,
we await his coming in glory;
and we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.
We pray you, gracious God, to send
your Holy Spirit upon these gifts, that they may be the sacrament of the body
of Christ and his blood of the new covenant. Unite us to your Son in his
sacrifice, that we, made acceptable in him, may be sanctified by the Holy Spirit.
In the fullness of time, reconcile all
things in Christ, and make them new, and bring us to that city of light where
you dwell with all your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the
firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation;
by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in
the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, almighty Father, now

The Lord’s Prayer
As our Saviour taught us, let us pray,
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.
