The Collect of the
Day
Let us pray,
Almighty God, your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ is the light of the world. May your people, illumined by your word and sacraments, shine with the radiance of his glory, that he may be known, worshipped, and obeyed to the ends of the earth; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. The Proclamation of
the Lord
First Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:1-9
A Reading From The
First Letter Of Paul To The Corinthians
Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes, To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, together with all those who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that has been given you in Christ Jesus, for in every way you have been enriched in him, in speech and knowledge of every kind just as the testimony of Christ has been strengthened among you so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ. He will also strengthen you to the end, so that you may be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful; by him you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
For the Word of God in scripture, among us and with us.
Thanks be to God.
Psalm 40:1-12
I waited patiently upon the Lord; he stooped to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the desolate pit, out of the mire and clay; he set my feet upon a high cliff and made my footing sure.
Behold, I come to do your will, O God.
He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God; many shall see, and stand in awe, and put their trust in the Lord.
Behold, I come to do your will, O God.
Happy are they who trust in the Lord! they do not resort to evil spirits or turn to false gods. Great things are they that you have done, O Lord my God! how great your wonders and your plans for us! there is none who can be compared with you. Oh, that I could make them known and tell them! but they are more than I can count.
Behold, I come to do your will, O God.
In sacrifice and offering you take no pleasure (you have given me ears to hear you); Burnt-offering and sin-offering you have not required, and so I said, "Behold, I come.
Behold, I come to do your will, O God.
In the roll of the book it is written concerning me: 'I love to do your will, O my God; your law is deep in my heart.'" I proclaimed righteousness in the great congregation; behold, I did not restrain my lips; and that, O Lord, you know.
Behold, I come to do your will, O God.
Your righteousness have I not hidden in my heart; I have spoken of your faithfulness and your deliverance; I have not concealed your love and faithfulness from the great congregation. You are the Lord; do not withhold your compassion from me; let your love and your faithfulness keep me safe for ever.
Behold, I come to do your will, O God.
430 Will You Come and
Follow Me
The Gospel: John 1:29-42
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.
Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
The next day John the Baptist saw Jesus coming toward him and declared, "Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! This is he of whom I said, 'After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me because he was before me.' I myself did not know him; but I came baptizing with water for this reason, that he might be revealed to Israel." And John testified, "I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, 'He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' And I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God." The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he exclaimed, "Look, here is the Lamb of God!" The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, "What are you looking for?" They said to him, "Rabbi" (which translated means Teacher), "where are you staying?" He said to them, "Come and see." They came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o'clock in the afternoon. One of the two who heard John speak and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. He first found his brother Simon and said to him, "We have found the Messiah" (which is translated Anointed). He brought Simon to Jesus, who looked at him and said, "You are Simon son of John. You are to be called Cephas" (which is translated Peter).
The Gospel of Christ.
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
Sermon
Prayers of the People
On this World Religion Day and as the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity begins, we pray that we may be united in the same mind and the same purpose, as we pray for the whole human family, saying: hear our prayer.
For the Church and
for the unity of purpose of all Christian people. We pray especially for all
bishops, priests and deacons, and that all of us may have the courage to come and see where
Jesus serves. God of love,
Hear our
prayer.
For this parish, that we who are called to celebrate this holy feast may see God’s glory reflected in us as we use our diverse gifts to show the love and mercy in all that we do. God of love,
Hear our prayer.
For the work towards reconciliation with Indigenous people and the acceptance of everyone in the church and community. God of love,
Hear our prayer.
For a spirit of hope, that all who find themselves walking in darkness may be renewed in mind and spirit with a vision and promise of life and wholeness. God of love,
Hear our
prayer.
For peace in all war-torn places in the world, for a welcome for all refugees and immigrants, for food and shelter for those in need. God of love,
Hear our
prayer.
For the members of the various levels of government, that your Spirit will give them wisdom, insight and courage to lead in ways that are just and righteous, and that everyone will have enough of what they need. God of love,
Hear our
prayer.
For all who struggle with the burdens of life, and for the people we know who are ill at home or in hospital, especially,
-
And others we may name out loud or in our hearts,
-
that the light of your love will bring them joy and wholeness. God of love,
Hear our prayer.
For victims of our society, that we may be moved to help protect the innocent. We pray for all those who have died in your peace, remembering especially,
-
that the light of Christ may shine upon them forever and bring comfort to their loved ones and to all who mourn. God of love,
Hear our prayer.
For the whole human family, help us to see your presence with us today and continue to inspire us with the lives of people like the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and drive out darkness with light and drive out hatred with love. God of love,
Hear our prayer.
God of all dawning light, hear our prayers and give us courage to answer quickly the call to follow you, letting nothing in us interfere with the good news of your realm. Glory to you for ever and ever. Amen.
Confession and
Absolution
Let us confess our sins, confident in God’s forgiveness.
Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen.
Almighty God have
mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and
strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus
Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Peace
The Rev’d Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said,
“Faith is taking the first step even when you can’t see the whole staircase.”
The peace of the Lord be always with you
and also with you.

Prayer Over the Gifts
Let us pray,
Living God, you have revealed your Son as the Messiah. May we hear his word and follow it, and live as children of light. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen.
The Great
Thanksgiving - Eucharistic Prayer 1
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.
It is indeed right
that we should praise you, gracious God, for you created all things. You formed
us in your own image: as your children you created us. When we turned
away from you in sin, you did not cease to care for us, but opened a path of
salvation for all people. You made a covenant with Israel, and through your
servants Abraham and Sarah gave the promise of a blessing to all nations.
Through Moses you led your people from bondage into freedom; through the
prophets you renewed your promise of salvation.
Therefore, with them,
and with all your saints who have served you in every age, we give thanks and
raise our voices to proclaim the glory of your name.
Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
Holy God, source of
life and goodness, all creation rightly gives you praise. In the fullness of
time, you sent your Son Jesus Christ, to share our human nature, to live and
die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He healed
the sick and ate and drank with outcasts and sinners; he opened the eyes of the
blind and proclaimed the good news of your kingdom to the poor and to those in
need. In all things he fulfilled your gracious will.
On the night he
freely gave himself to death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread, and when he had
given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said,
“Take, eat: this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance
of me.”
After supper he took
the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said,
“Drink this, all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed
for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this
for the remembrance of me.”
Gracious God, his
perfect sacrifice destroys the power of sin and death; by raising him to life
you give us life for evermore.
Therefore we proclaim
the mystery of faith.
Christ has died.
Christ is risen.
Christ will come again.
Recalling his death,
proclaiming his resurrection, and looking for his coming again in glory, we
offer you, Father, this bread and this cup. Send your Holy Spirit upon us and
upon these gifts, that all who eat and drink at this table may be one body and one
holy people, a living sacrifice in Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Through Christ, with
Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory is yours,
almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer
Rejoicing in the presence of God here among us,
as our Saviour taught us, so we pray
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.
Breaking of the Bread
We break the bread of life,
