The Gathering of the Community

The Apostolic Greeting
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you always.
        And also with you.

Hymn 1: Holy, Holy, Holy

The Collect of the Day
Father, we praise you: through your Word and Holy Spirit you created all things. You reveal your salvation in all the world by sending to us Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh. Through your Holy Spirit you give us a share in your life and love. Fill us with the vision of your glory, that we may always serve and praise you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Proclamation of the Word
A Reading from the Book of Proverbs
Does not wisdom call, and does not understanding raise her voice? On the heights, beside the way, at the crossroads she takes her stand; beside the gates in front of the town, at the entrance of the portals she cries out: "To you, O people, I call, and my cry is to all that live. The Lord created me at the beginning of his work, the first of his acts of long ago. Ages ago I was set up, at the first, before the beginning of the earth. When there were no depths I was brought forth, when there were no springs abounding with water. Before the mountains had been shaped, before the hills, I was brought forth - when he had not yet made earth and fields, or the world's first bits of soil. When he established the heavens, I was there, when he drew a circle on the face of the deep, when he made firm the skies above, when he established the fountains of the deep, when he assigned to the sea its limit, so that the waters might not transgress his command, when he marked out the foundations of the earth, then I was beside him, like a master worker; and I was daily his delight, rejoicing before him always, rejoicing in his inhabited world and delighting in the human race." 8:1-4, 22-31

Psalm 8
Refrain: O Lord our governor, how exalted is your name in all the world!
O Lord our governor, how exalted is your name in all the world! Out of the mouths of infants and children your majesty is praised above the heavens. R You have set up a stronghold against your adversaries, to quell the enemy and the avenger. When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars you have set in their courses, R What is man that you should be mindful of him? the son of man that you should seek him out? You have made him but little lower than the angels; you adorn him with glory and honour; R You give him mastery over the works of your hands; you put all things under his feet; All sheep and oxen, even the wild beasts of the field, R The birds of the air, the fish of the sea, and whatsoever walks in the paths of the sea. O Lord our governor, how exalted is your name in all the world! R

A Reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans
Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. 5:1-5

Hymn 256: Yours the Hand That Made Creation

The Holy Gospel
The Lord be with you.
        And also with you.
The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John
Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
Jesus said, "I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you." 16:12-15
The Gospel of Christ.
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Sermon:

Renewal of Baptism Vows
In baptism, God calls us out of darkness into his marvellous light.
The Paschal Candle is lit.

To follow Christ means dying to sin and rising to new life with him. Therefore, I ask:
Do you reaffirm your renunciation of evil?
        I do.
Do you renew your commitment to Jesus Christ?
        I do.
Do you put your whole trust in his grace and love?
I do, and with Gods grace
I will follow him as my Saviour and Lord.

May God, who has given you the desire to follow Christ,
give you the strength to continue in the Way.

Thanksgiving Over the Water
Water is poured into the font
Praise God who made heaven and earth,
who keeps his promise for ever.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give thanks and praise.
Father, for your gift of water in creation,
we give you thanks and praise.
For your Spirit, sweeping over the waters,
bringing light and life,
we give you thanks and praise.
For your Son Jesus Christ our Lord,
baptized in the river Jordan,
we give you thanks and praise.
For your new creation,
brought to birth by water and the Spirit,
we give you thanks and praise.
For your Son Jesus who was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life.
we give you thanks and praise.

We thank you, Father, for the water of baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore, in joyful obedience to your Son, we celebrate our fellowship in him in faith. We pray that all who have passed through the water of baptism may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Saviour.

To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honour and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

The Profession of Faith
Brothers and sisters, I ask you to profess the faith of the Church. Do you believe and trust in God the Father?
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
Do you believe and trust in his Son Jesus Christ?
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
Do you believe and trust in the Holy Spirit?
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Affirmation of Commitment
Will you continue in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers?
        I will, with God’s help.
Will you persevere in resisting evil and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord?
        I will, with God’s help.
Will you proclaim by word and example the good news of God in Christ?
        I will, with God’s help.
Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbour as yourself?
        I will, with God’s help.
Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being?
        I will, with God’s help.
Will you strive to safeguard the integrity of God’s creation, and respect, sustain and renew the life of the Earth?
        I will, with God’s help.
May Christ dwell in your hearts through faith, that you may be rooted and grounded in love and bring forth the fruit of the Spirit. Amen.

At this time, those who so desire may come to the font and bless themselves.

Blessing
God of heaven and earth, before the foundation of the universe and the beginning of time you are the triune God: the Author of creation, the eternal Word of salvation, and the life-giving Spirit of wisdom. Guide us to all truth by your Spirit, that we may proclaim all that Christ revealed and rejoice in the glory he shared with us. Glory and praise to you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.
